Thrilling Themes!

I've returned to sweep you away Occultists!

Now we're heading into themes.

My work is mish-mashed in with no particular themes or groups allotted to them which needs to change.

I've decided to organize them into themed groups and the various themes will grow as they start to sell. Within these groups I'll have them priced from lowest to highest so people don't have to bounce around looking for what's affordable.

Thus far I believe I'll create the following groups to block my visages into:

*Masks fashioned after various tribal leaders around the globe!

*Any character you might find in a circus will be featured in this section!

*Find flamenco dancers, powerful conquistadors, bull fighters and dashing senoritas here!

*Harem captives, Sultans, the flames of desert bonfires and nomadic tribes will clutch at your imagination hungrily...

*Gods, beasts and goddesses from mythology found all over the world will congregate within the walls of this section!

*Pin-Ups, cigar girls and 50's house wives will sway their way into your life.

*Victorian, Chantilly, Edwardian, Renaissance, Elizabethan, Baroque, Georgian, Regency and Medieval eras come together to dazzle the aristocrats who find their way to Oculto Masks.

There will probably be more sections and they might even added today, we'll see.

Overall it's a brilliant beginning!

Look Of Love: The Mood Of Oculto

Sweeping back into your minds, Occultists…

It's high time I give a more precise description of what I envision my personal website and the Oculto mood to feel like. How I want to make you feel.

I know you want to feel...

I've put great effort into creating a story and persona for each of my disguises. They create moods which are made to burrow into your heart and mind and become a part of you, or transform you into exactly what you envision being for a night.

A week.

For however long you choose to wear your veneer.

Sillily enough I want you to imagine the movie The Mask with our wonderful Canadian actor Jim Carrey tangoing through each scene, transformed by a being, an entity trapped in a foreign and ancient disguise.

I have injected each mask with a character, sometimes dark or sometimes light but always laden with intrigue. I encourage each client to browse through my ever growing collection and find the siren and tale that sings to them, drawing them close with a kind of indefatigable magnetism which may even frighten them at the start.

I want you to become familiar with your alter ego and then eliminate the fear. Embrace this surpressed part of yourself.

That way the mask no longer remains a mask, but becomes an outward reflection of your innermost desires.

My theme will always be dark: waterfalls of black satin draped with masked faces emerging from the shadows. Opulence, luxury, excitement in the unknown, a high level of tension vibrating between you and whomever lays their eyes on you.

I'm bringing Eyes Wide Shut into the foreground and resurrecting druidic pomp and sultry ritual. Weaving a type romanticism and forbidden pleasure unparalleled to the games lovers play today. I mean to make a mark that stays.

To burn my masks into your mind and have you return again and again,
drawn to the prospect of myths brought to light.

A Quiet Voice Made Loud: Being Seen And Heard

Hola Occultists,  here we go!

So, it looks like there may be a possibility to have my masks shown and sold in a prestigious downtown Art Gallery Store that entertains admirers from around the world and presents up and coming as well as famous (deceased or alive) artists.

The gallery's current exhibition: The Colour of My Dreams -The Surrealist Revolution in Art.

They hold biannual fundraising masquerades, hoity-toity events filled with visual artists, live music, tarantella dancing, arial performers and interactive plays/art installations. People gussy up in cocktails, ball gowns and tuxes to be seen and the gallery supplies masks for every person who hasn't brought their own. Sadly, the people are magnificently attired but their faces are not. For all the gallery has to offer it always seems to fall short when it comes to providing most of their guests with quality disguises.

My hope is to make my creations available to them prior to and during the event so they can fully immerse themselves in the complete mystery and wonder a masquerade ball should possess.

Another avenue I'm seeking to explore is getting a couple of feature, repeat segments on local breakfast television shows. Everything is in the works!

The Time And Place To Be!

Welcome back Occultists! The big wheel keeps on turning… and proud Mary keeps on burning.

So let us see where we are now,

Currently I'm gathering up a list of prominent Masquerade festivals and parties that occur around the world. My intention (wherever they're advertised online) is to make a connection with the site owner and provide a link to the hundreds or thousands of people flocking there for information so they can be referred to my site to purchase my masks which will be sent to them in time for the event!

Excellent progress on this front, the list is steadily growing and I've decided to start with the U.S first and then move my way around the world.

Bringing things back home -I'm also attempting to see if I can have my higher-end masks (in the $300-$500 range) sold and presented in smaller galleries in more affluent sections of town. Unfortunately this is proving to be a spray of tacks on my road because these galleries make their money off of artists who are already well established, have heavy schooling/training and have exhibited in other well known galleries across North America or world-wide. Compared to them I've barely a pot to piss in to my name… but we must start somewhere.  I think my best bet is gaining recognition through marketing myself online, over showing my work to limited groups of tourists in real time.

Next on the list of pursuits is hitting up the high volume craft fairs that come in the Spring and Winter. (It's always good to make a name in your hometown first if you can, so your fellow men can claim you proudly as their own and tell everyone they watched you steadily grow in their very own city!)

I've found about 7 or 8 extremely popular craft events that boast 2-4 thousand visitors per day (usually running for two days) and these would be incredible for exposure even if nothing was sold. Tons of business cards will go out and people will simply be able to see the beauty of my products. The application forms are printed out for all of them and I can make all of their deadlines. I could possibly end up presenting for their Winter fairs if I get accepted.

I would offer just a few high-priced masks but make the majority of them affordable, (unique of course) and definitely not christmas themed.

The only issue we have here is that all accepted artisans usually have to pay a jury fee (the application fee relating to the jury, team or panel that looks through all of the prospective artists they might choose to feature -which can be thousands-) but this fee is usually low and included in the acceptance fee.

Now, the acceptance fee is where it can get expensive. I mean Really Expensive depending on the quality, size and prestige of the craft fair. The fee you have to pay can range from $50-$1300 per day (if you choose to present for both days of the fair) .This fee covers electricity if you need outlets, your table and the space you're renting.

Sometimes the fee can be lowered if you bring your own table, but when you're looking to sell at as many shows as I want to (pretty much all of the biggest ones) $50-$100 per table per day can rapidly add up, especially if I have no previous media or press that will draw people specifically to me.

I'm willing to bypass Circle Craft at the new convention centre this year which displays all of the creme de la creme artisans of Canada, simply because the spaces cost up to 2,000 per day!! Hahahahahaha maybe next year… maybe never.

Pursuits of the Masked Avenger!

Good afternoon fellow Occultists! (Yes, I've decided to name you after worshippers of the Dark Lord because it just so happens that my business name is frighteningly similar to the word Occult).

After the unbelievably pregnant pause which ensued after I completed the layout of this blog, I am finally ready to disclose what this busy little bee has been up to within her brand spanking new Oculto Mask business.

Initially I thought the best way to go about getting my masks viewed by the townspeople would be to hit up all of the boutique shops and inquire about consignment percentages. This way I'm guaranteed constant traffic viewing, my work will pass along by word of mouth and will gain the occasional (graduating to hopefully often) sale. As I started dropping emails to local boutiques I quickly found that many of these places had quite a substantial interest in featuring/selling my masks but were asking for a 50-60% consignment fee. Now I know why they were so exited.

Now, this would be completely fine with me if I was mass producing my items and putting them in shops all around town -but my products are one of a kind. This is one of the main, enticing, selling features about them. No duplicates. You can be sure that only you will ever see the mask you purchase around town wherever you take it -and not on any other face but your own.

My creations are priced ranging from $65-$500 depending on how intricate the design is and what materials are used. Even the lower priced items are one of a kind, so when I was told that I could be left with less than half of what I priced my item at (which is directly in correlation to the hours of effort I put into my work) I became more than slightly disgruntled.  I wasn't so desperate to have people see my products that I would walk away with next to nothing for my efforts, so I decided consignment was out unless I happen to find a worthwhile exchange.
